  • It is the only telecommunication company in Tanzania that recorded the highest gain of the market share in the quarter ending June 2026.

Dar es Salaam. The Tanzanian internet market has recorded steady growth in the first half of 2026 reaching more than 62 million internet subscribers, the highest performance ever reported in the country.

The growth is opening up more opportunities for social and economic development in the country that is expecting to maximize the use of digital technology to achieve its Dira2050 goals.

The ever increasing growth in internet subscriptions has continued to stiffen competition among internet service providers with each telecom finding a way to attract more subscribers to boost their businesses.

Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA)’s communications data for the quarter ending June 2026 shows that four telecommunications companies slightly lost their market shares during the period under review with only Yas recording the largest gain in a quarter.

The data published in the regulator’s Communications Statistics Report, shows Yas market share moved to 28.09 percent in June 2026, up from 26.66 percent reported in the previous quarter.

This means that Yas added 1.43 percentage points to its market share within a quarter, the largest increase among all telecommunication companies. Vodacom Tanzania PLC, the leading telecom and a close YAS competitor, slightly dropped 0.34 percentage points of its market share.

In the preceding quarter ending in March 2026, TCRA reported a total of 58.9 million internet subscriptions in Tanzania, with Yas holding a 26.66 percent share of that market.

“The mobile internet market share by subscription continues to exhibit high competition which is necessary in promoting affordability,” TCRA said in a report launched earlier in August 2026.

The performance includes subscriptions of mobile wireless, fixed wireless and fixed wired which both allow connectivity through various devices.

The Internet plays a crucial role in social and economic transformation in Tanzania as it helps it improve education, health, agriculture, transport, financial services, media and other sectors.

Nukta Habari analysis shows that despite the major shift in ownership four years ago, the company has successfully maintained its position as the second largest player in Tanzania’s internet market for three years staying ahead of competitors like Halotel, TTCL, and Airtel.

The company has been awarded for three consecutive years as the fastest internet provider in Tanzania by Ookla, a global leader in network intelligence and connectivity data, best known as the company behind Speedtest.net

Recently, Yas was honored with two accolades at the TEHAMA Awards 2026, further strengthening its position in Tanzania’s telecommunications market.

The company won the Best National Internet Service Provider (ISP) award for the second consecutive year. It also received the ICT for Environmental Conservation award for its innovative use of technology to support environmental sustainability.

Yas Business Chief Officer Norman Kiondo said the recognition speaks to something bigger than the trophies themselves as the company continues to improve its network for better services.

“They reflect the work of our teams, the trust of our customers and partners, and our continued commitment to using technology not only to connect Tanzania, but to create meaningful and sustainable impact,” he wrote in his LinkedIn page.
